The Institute for Learning Innovation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to understanding, facilitating and communicating about free-choice learning. Through our work with organizations of all types, we aspire to support access to rich and meaningful learning experiences for everyone.
Founded in 1986, the nonprofit Institute for Learning Innovation helps museums, libraries and other free-choice learning institutions support their visitors' quests for learning across their lifespan. Through research, evaluation, dialogue, and support, we strengthen individual and institutional capacity to create a society where free-choice learning opportunities are recognized, valued and supported.
We describe free-choice learning as learning that is:
* Self-motivated
* Lifelong, and
* Personally guided by an individual's personal needs and interests.
The work of the Institute enables museums, libraries, parks, and similar institutions to make confident and considered decisions as they develop exhibits, programs, experiences and events. Our expertise in program and exhibit evaluation, research, project development, interpretive planning, teaching and publishing offers an array of essential resources to guide all of our clients' varied activities. The mission of the Institute for Learning Innovation is to study, support and advocate for free-choice learning – learning that fulfills the lifelong human quest for knowledge, understanding and personal fulfillment.
Our Vision The Institute for Learning Innovation envisions a world where exemplary free-choice learning opportunities become a community priority worldwide. It is a world where research and literature about free-choice learning abound; where widespread support for free-choice learning exists at all levels of government, in all educational settings and within all corporations and community institutions; and it is a world in which there is universal public awareness of the significant role that free-choice learning plays in a Learning society.
